Position Summary

The Culinary Services department at Saint John’s University (SJU) invites applications for a Temporary Dish Room Associate.

The Temporary Dish Room Associate supports Dining Services by ensuring clean and sanitary dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment. This position works as part of a team in the dish room and performs custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and other cleaning projects as assigned by supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor the dish machine before, during, and after mealtimes, ensuring proper washing and sanitation of dishes, flatware, and cookware.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the dish room and related equipment.
  • Assist in training and providing feedback to part-time staff.
  • Support recycling program by sorting materials and ensuring procedures are followed.
  • Restock service and production areas with clean equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Maintain a clean uniform, practice proper sanitation and safe work habits.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • On-the-job training is provided.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work well with Dining Services staff and student employees.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to learn proper use of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Availability to work rotating shifts, including regular evening and weekend assignments.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs occasionally and smaller amounts frequently.
  • Frequent pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, bending, and stooping.
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold environments).
  • Frequent exposure to cleaning and sanitizing solutions; must be able to use single-use and reusable gloves as required.
