The Director of Transportation provides leadership and oversight for transportation staff and college-owned vehicles, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services. This role oversees the operation and maintenance of bus and motor vehicle systems and ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal motor carrier regulations for commercial drivers. In partnership with Human Resources, the Director ensures that federally required drug and alcohol testing programs are administered in full compliance with federal law.    

The Transportation Department's mission is to provide safe, friendly, courteous, prompt, and cost-effective transportation for students, faculty, and staff.

PLEASE NOTE: This position is designated as essential staff. Applicants must be able to pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and physical, and will be subject to DOT random drug and alcohol testing during employment. They must obtain a Class B Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License with a passenger endorsement and no air-brake restriction. A copy of the applicant’s personal driving record must be provided at the time of the interview and will be reviewed annually.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

 

Responsibilities

Department Leadership and Administration

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and training for Transportation staff.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and oversee performance management processes.

  • Track, review, and approve employee work hours.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across both institutions to support transportation goals and service needs.

  • Manage the transportation department budget, including operating and repair expenses, and oversee internal billing and invoicing for vehicle repair and maintenance services.

Fleet and Mechanical Management

  • Supervise mechanic duties and establish maintenance schedules and repair priorities.

  • Assess vehicle repair needs and determine whether work is completed in-house or by external vendors.

  • Ensure all campus vehicles meet safety standards and are maintained in roadworthy condition.

  • Maintain accurate vehicle maintenance and safety records.

Busing and Transportation Operations

  • Develop and manage bus routes, schedules, and driver assignments to align with passenger demand.

  • Coordinate and manage reservations and dispatching for CSB and SJU sponsored off-campus and charter trips, including the use of college owned buses and external transportation providers as needed.

  • Communicate and post service cancellations related to transportation disruptions.

  • Serve as a relief bus driver when operational needs require.

  • Collaborate with the directors of Security and Life Safety to assess weather and road conditions and determine when bus services should be modified or suspended.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:    

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus a minimum of five years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three or more years of experience in vehicle maintenance

  • One or more years of employee supervision experience; supervision of union-represented employees preferred

  • Valid Class B CDL with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction

  • Working knowledge of state and federal transportation rules and regulations

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with members of the college community

  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn computer-based systems related to scheduling, recordkeeping, and compliance

  • Management and organizational skills necessary to supervise a transportation department, including oversight of required state and federal motor carrier records

  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with minimal supervision

  • Ability to perform job functions safely, including completion of required training and proper use of personal protective equipment

  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as needed

  • Ability to successfully pass a driving history check

Physical requirements:

  • Must successfully complete a DOT physical.

  • This position is subject to DOT random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment.

  • Ability to safely operate a variety of equipment and instruct others in their proper use.

  • Ability to tolerate and work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to work safely with and/or around hazardous chemicals.

Travel requirements:

  • Regular travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
