The Small Engine Repair Technician is responsible for performing preventive and general maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on college-owned vehicles, buses, and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. This role supports the college’s transportation operations by maintaining fleet readiness and providing limited driving or transportation assistance as needed. The position promotes safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance while supporting the daily operational needs of students, faculty, and staff.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

 

Responsibilities

Preventative and General Maintenance.

  • Perform preventive and general maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, setup, and repairs on all college-owned and operated vehicles and grounds equipment.

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on small engines and specialty equipment consistent with the expectations of a certified mechanic.

  • Instruct college employees and students on the safe and proper use of college-owned vehicles and equipment, and document improper use after appropriate instruction has been provided.

  • Test vehicles and equipment following repairs to ensure safe and proper operation.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

  • Perform minor paint and body repairs on campus vehicles.

  • Assist with bus repairs as needed.

Transportation

  • Provide transportation of passengers via bus, van, or car to assigned destinations when no other qualified driver is available.

  • Be available outside of normal work hours for emergency vehicle repairs or transportation duties, as required.

Other

  • Perform maintenance tasks that support the college’s operational needs and prioritize service to students, facilities, and staff.

  • Perform maintenance tasks intended to reduce the cost of vehicle and equipment operation for the college.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Two-year technical college degree in automotive or diesel mechanics or completion of equivalent apprenticeship course required; welding training or apprenticeship preferred.

  • Experience performing repairs and maintenance on a wide variety of industrial and construction equipment.

  • Experience in maintenance and repair of industrial engines and construction equipment preferred.

  • Valid Class B CDL with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction.

  • DOT inspection certification for annual bus inspections.

  • Advanced knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and mechanical transmissions, automotive electrical systems and hydraulic lift systems.

  • Skills and knowledge of oxy-acetylene, ARC and MIG welding procedures and related equipment use.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal transportation regulations.

  • Effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with members of the college community.

  • Ability to carry out job functions in a safe manner, which may require receiving additional training and using personal protective equipment.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical requirements:

  • Must successfully complete a DOT physical.

  • This position is subject to DOT random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment.

  • Ability to safely operate a variety of equipment and instruct others in their proper use.

  • Ability to tolerate and work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift or move items up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to work with and or around hazardous chemicals in a safe manner.

Travel requirements:

  • Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
