Position Summary

To command and direct the entire investigative section and operational section of the Department of Public Safety Department at the University of Detroit Mercy. The training and educating the entire Department of Public Safety and University community through active seminars, and consistent enforcement of all City, State, Federal Laws and University Policy and Procedures. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of position. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all personnel are properly trained in the performance of their related job, while monitoring and evaluating their performance, and take corrective action as needed. (OIC Department Training Section).
  • Ensure that all shifts and events are appropriately staffed and that all personnel are briefed on situations and conditions, which require their attention.
  • Respond to situations, of a high profile in nature, which necessitates the presence of a Lieutenant for immediate and crucial decisions.
  • Review all reports on a daily basic and ensure that all incidents are investigated and proper reports are generated with the appropriate corrective actions.( OIC of Investigation Section).
  • Monitor crime trends and prepare reports for statistical purposes and to eliminate opportunities or foreseeable risks.
  • Consistent update and review of all departmental policy, procedures and practices to ensure the departmental strives to meet and achieve their goals and objections.
  • Enforce all city, State, and Federal Laws and University Policies and Procedures.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education – A college degree. 
  • Experience – Five years to seven years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).

Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the university for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation. MCOLES Certified  or Certifiable

  • Must have strong organizational and administrative skills, a good work ethic, and a positive attitude for interacting with other people.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word/Excel/Access is required with a strong computer aptitude for learning various computer applications; 
  • Must be adaptable with ability to accept and support change, highly skilled at multi-tasking and detailed orientated, able to effectively work independently or in a team environment, and able to work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrate a professional demeanor and a clean well-groomed appearance that creates a positive impression with customers and coworkers.
  • Must be dependable, reliable, and confident working in a professional environment.
  • MCOLES certifiable required.

Physical Requirements

Job requires repetitively lifting average weight objects with repetitive bending and stooping.  Frequently lifts heavy objects but alternating with lighter activities. Job may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing. Job may require above-average agility and dexterity. 

Additional Information  

Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or dragging objects weighing up to 200 lbs. (200+ in some situations), 10 feet or less; running, jumping and climbing various inclines, elevated surfaces, terrains, and/or obstacles; subject to toxic chemicals, fumes, and/or odors; exposed to infectious diseases.
