The Director of the Mark and Teresa Fleischhacker Center for Ethical Leadership in Action (Fleischhacker Center) serves as a strategic leader and connector between the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSB+SJU) and its surrounding communities. Rooted in the liberal arts tradition of community responsibility and holistic education, this role fosters meaningful external partnerships for both community-engaged learning (CEL) and future employer engagement. The Director cultivates relationships that enrich student learning experiences, increase the visibility of students to future employers, and strengthen CSB+SJU’s role as a vital and responsive community partner. The Director is also a key leader on the True North Journey team (CSB+SJU’s signature four-year experience) guiding the strategy and implementation of a community mentorship program for CSB+SJU students.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

 

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Vision (60%) 

Develop and implement a comprehensive external partnership strategy aligned with CSB+SJU’s mission and values. 

  • Guide the strategy and implementation of a community mentorship program for CSB+SJU students. 

  • Hire and lead a team of program managers (Network Navigators) to support the growth of the community mentorship program. 

  • Serve as a thought leader in community engagement, social impact, and public scholarship. 

  • Represent CSB+SJU at community events, coalitions, and regional networks. 

  • Build and sustain mutually beneficial community relationships with nonprofits, schools, businesses, government agencies, and civic organizations. 

  • Develop and cultivate strategic partnerships with community organizations and individuals to provide experiential learning opportunities and connections. 

  • Partner with faculty in developing and integrating CEL components into their classrooms. 

  • Partner with Experience and Professional Development (XPD), the Center for Global Education (CGE), and Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholars (OURS) to engage students on behalf of the Experience Hub. 

Operational Management (40%)  

  • Manage daily operations of the Fleischhacker Center, including effective training and supervision of staff. 

  • Oversee the Fleischhacker Center’s budget of operational and endowment funds. 

  • Facilitate and manage meetings for the Fleischhacker Advisory Committee. 

  • Facilitate collaborative programming that address community needs and enhance student learning. 

  • Implement tools and processes for tracking community engagement. 

  • Analyze and report community engagement trend information and recommend institutional responses as appropriate.  

  • Work with Institutional Research to ensure assessment of Center goals. 

  • Implement tools and processes for tracking community engagement. 

  • Promote CSB+SJU’s mission through storytelling, media outreach, and annual reporting. 

  • Co-direct the Summer Leadership Fellows, including selection and training of Fellows.

Other duties as assigned.  

 

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:                      

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Public Administration, Social Work, MBA, or related field. 

  • Five or more years of experience in community engagement, experiential education, or higher education.   

  • Demonstrated success in building cross-sector partnerships and leading collaborative initiatives.   

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a complex environment and build positive relationships with internal and external clientele. Ability to motivate team members in support of the vision and to collaborate with one another in achieving team goals. 

  • Strong project management and planning skills; the ability to effectively manage multiple changing priorities. 

  • Strong organizational, budget management, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. 

  • Ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours as required for events. 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with CEL pedagogy and community-based research.   

  • Volunteer management experience is a plus. 

Physical requirements:

  • Requires working at a computer for extended periods, including typing, reading from a screen, and using various software programs essential for the role. 

  • Occasionally required to lift or move items up to 25-30 pounds.  

Travel requirements:

  • Some travel is required for events and conferences.  

  • Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
