The Power Plant Director is responsible for directing and organizing the operation of the Power Plant, which provides the monastery and college with heating, cooling, domestic water, sanitary sewer, electrical, fire suppression, fire alarm, ventilation, and irrigation. In addition, the position oversees a staff that performs the maintenance and repair of all equipment providing these services to the campus, monastery and monastery owned properties located off campus.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise operating and maintenance personnel to provide heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); potable water; sanitary sewer; and plumbing services to all campus, monastery and off campus buildings.

  • Supervise inspection, preventive maintenance, and equipment repair/replacement programs for all equipment supporting campus and monastery services.

  • Assign repair work orders, prepare work schedules, and supervise work execution to ensure efficient use of resources.

  • Maintain records of use and consumption for electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and water throughout the campus and monastery.

  • Assist in developing plans and services to improve campus operations, including building and equipment design/selection, energy use, utilization, and comfort control methods.

  • Oversee the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) for the powerplant.

  • Implement and oversee the inventory management system for the powerplant staff.

  • Direct the specifying, ordering, and inventory of all parts, materials, and supplies required to maintain the campus in peak operating condition, ensuring compliance with campus material handling guidelines.

  • Ensure a safe and resourceful environment for students, staff, residents, and guests of the campus, monastery, and monastery owned properties.

  • Prepare annual operating, personnel, and capital budgets for all assigned areas. Assist in preparing and updating campus budgets.

  • Oversee the campus wide elevator maintenance contract, annual inspections, and emergency call response.

  • Oversee annual testing of all campus systems as governed by NFPA and the MN DOLI.

  • Be available for emergency calls.

  • Oversee various building automation systems across campus.

  • Provide utility locates (Gopher State One Call) for on-campus utilities.

  • Oversee required testing and reporting for swimming pool.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Facilities and Resilience Officer.


 

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Valid Chief Grade B Operating Engineer's License

  • Class C Water Operator's License

  • Minimum of five years of experience in Power Plant operations, with demonstrated proficiency in:

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, electrical diagrams, and control schematic drawings.

  • Using diagnostic equipment, including volt-ohm meters, multi-meters, tachometers, and related tools.

  • Testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, and repairing a variety of digital, pneumatic, and electrical equipment.

  • Post-secondary education in mechanical/electrical maintenance, boiler operations, HVAC, plumbing, or a related field preferred.

  • Proven supervisory skills and experience managing teams effectively.

  • Proficiency in operating computers for email communication and completing basic tasks.

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work professionally with staff, students, and other stakeholders.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a campus vehicle; includes the completion of college defensive driving program.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certified Pool Operator certification issued by State of Minnesota

  • Experience with Siemens control systems

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch to access equipment, wiring, and pipes.

  • Strong motor coordination and manual dexterity, with good vision, including depth perception and accurate color recognition.

  • Ability to tolerate noise and vibrations from operating machinery.

  • Knowledge of and ability to work safely with or near potentially hazardous chemicals and materials.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

Travel requirements:

  • Regular travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
