Overview

The Providence College Department of Social Work invites applicants for the position of a tenure-track Assistant Professor in its baccalaureate level social work department commencing in August 2026.

The Social Work program at Providence College was first accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 1976, and has been continuously accredited since that time. Its graduates are highly regarded by employers and graduate programs in social work. Unique to this position is the small, personalized community of learning that characterizes the educational model at Providence College. The Department has approximately 50 majors and is a five-person department with three full-time faculty, one full-time Field Education Director, and an Administrative Coordinator, which allows for small class sizes and relationships with students that are supportive of their goals and aspirations. Our student body has grown increasingly diverse and a strong commitment to supporting the success of students from historically underrepresented social, economic, and cultural groups is preferred. The Department of Social Work and college highly values student-centered and interactive pedagogy to support and mentor our students within and across disciplines.

Education and Experience

The successful candidate will have an MSW from a CSWE accredited program and an earned doctorate in social work (PhD/DSW) or related field, potential for teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level, and the ability to establish a scholarly research program that advances the social work profession. The candidate will have post MSW practice experience at either the micro or macro level or both. Potential foci of teaching include human behavior through the life span, research, and diversity. Areas of specialization are open; however, preference will be given to those with quantitative research methodology skills and established scholarship in the areas of public health, social determinants of health, or environmental justice. The successful candidate will also possess a willingness to be active in professional service to the college’s expectations of tenured/pre-tenured faculty. The course load is 3-3 with the eligibility to apply for a one-semester pre-tenure research leave after the third year.
