The Life Safety Services at Saint John's University (SJU) and Campus Security Department at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) invite applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefit-eligible position of Dispatch Officer.

$1,000 sign-on bonus valid through August 31, 2025. Terms applied to sign-on bonus can be provided by hiring manager. 

The Dispatch Officer is responsible for receiving and coordinating responses to both emergency and non-emergency calls from students, employees, and visitors. These calls may include medical emergencies, fire alarms, reports of suspicious activity, and a wide range of campus-related concerns. The dispatcher evaluates incoming information and communicates with the appropriate departments or personnel to ensure timely and effective response. In some cases, the dispatcher may also coordinate with local emergency services to facilitate emergency or non-emergency support.

In addition to dispatch duties, this position includes administrative responsibilities such as managing building key card access, assisting with campus identification services for students and employees, and monitoring the campus-wide surveillance system.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

 

Responsibilities

Dispatch 

    • Receive and dispatch emergency 911, fire, rescue, and security calls; monitor and operate Code Blue, fire, burglar, CCTV, and alarm systems.
    • Coordinate emergency response efforts with campus security, EMTs, fire department, facilities, and student affairs as necessary.
    • Provide support to callers during emergencies, offering reassurance and basic instructions as needed.
    • Maintain detailed logs of emergency calls, actions taken, and outcomes.
    • Be available for emergency on-call response, assist with walk-ins, and provide professional customer service.
    • Conduct and document code blue/elevator phone checks and report maintenance issues to appropriate departments.
    • Maintain and update the dispatch manual, safety procedure protocols, and equipment readiness.

Administrative

    • Ensure compliance with campus safety protocols, confidentiality, and data security regulations.
    • Perform clerical and administrative duties such as scheduling, data entry, fingerprinting, and report preparation.
    • Manage ID production, card access, and alarm systems, including access levels, billing, and coordination with campus partners.
    • Maintain vehicle data and manage parking ticketing, billing, and appeals processes.
    • Issue Ground Use Permits for camping, fishing, watercraft use, and other designated campus activities.
    • Oversee the Weapons Vault check-in/check-out process and manage lost and found property.
    • Train, schedule, and supervise student officers; assist with hiring processes for officers and staff.

Other 

    • Train, schedule, and supervise student officers; assist with hiring processes for officers and staff.
    • Assist with patrol duties during large events, traffic control, medicals, or as needed.
    • Testify at judicial proceedings as required.
    • Attend required trainings and departmental meetings.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Minimum of two years of experience working as an emergency dispatcher, or equivalent experience in a fast-paced, customer service environment. Relevant certifications such as Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), telecommunicator I/II or similar are highly valued.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in stressful situations.
    • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and make quick, informed decisions under pressure.
    • Ability to remain calm and composed in emergency situations and to provide clear and concise instructions to callers.
    • Proficiency with computer systems, including office software and emergency dispatch software. Experience with radio communication systems and other dispatch technology is preferred.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to ensure a cohesive and effective emergency response.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information.
    • Commitment to providing excellent customer service to all members of the campus community and guests.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.  Scheduling is subject to change at any time to accommodate the needs of the institutions.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

    • Requires working at a computer for extended periods, including typing, reading from a screen, and using various software programs essential for the role.
    • Occasionally required to lift or move items up to 25 pounds.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
    • Other travel for training or other purposes may also be occasionally required.
