Position Summary

The Culinary Services department at Saint John’s University invites applications for a part-time (0.45 FTE), position of Service Associate I.

The Service Associate I provides hospitality services to the Saint John’s campus community. The role involves offering front-line service to all Culinary Services customers, assisting in the daily assembly of menu items, and participating in various day-to-day operations within the department.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and provide daily service of entrees, desserts, beverages, salads, and other menu items in the dining area.
  • Assist with food production, including assembling menu items and performing specific tasks such as making deli trays and organizing pickup orders.
  • Maintain and restock assigned food stations, ensuring cleanliness and quality of products.
  • Support service in alternate dining areas and catering functions as needed.
  • Present food in an appealing manner and provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and customers to ensure smooth service operations.
  • Operate equipment safely and follow all food safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, professional appearance and adhere to uniform standards.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school education or equivalent
  • Previous food service experience preferred 
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Willingness to maintain cleanliness and follow food safety guidelines
  • Available to work rotating shifts as requested.  This includes regular weekend assignments as required by departmental schedules.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to lift items up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate temperature fluctuations (e.g., working near ovens, or in coolers/freezers).
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, lifting, bending, balancing, and handling materials for extended periods.
  • Exposure to and use of cleaning products, including detergents, degreasers, and sanitizing solutions, with or without single-use gloves.
