Position Summary

The Athletics Department at Saint John’s University invites applications for a full-time (0.83 FTE), benefit eligible position of Equipment Manager.

The Equipment Manager plays a critical role in supporting the athletic programs of the institution by overseeing all aspects of equipment management. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that student-athletes and coaches have the necessary equipment for training, practices, and competitions.

Responsibilities

Equipment Inventory and Maintenance:

  • Manage and maintain an inventory of athletic equipment and apparel for all sports teams.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair equipment regularly to ensure it meets safety and performance standards.
  • Organize and store equipment efficiently to ensure accessibility when needed.
  • Staff the equipment room during the required hours of operation to support needs for games and practices.  
  • Distribute uniforms, practice gear, and equipment to student-athletes.
  • Track the issuance of equipment, ensuring accurate records of what has been distributed and returned.
  • Ensure that all equipment complies with NCAA safety regulations and standards.
  • Work with coaching staff to implement equipment safety protocols and training.
  • Maintain detailed records of all equipment purchases, inventories, and returns.
  • Create reports on equipment status and expenditures as needed.
  • Address any equipment-related issues or emergencies during practices and competitions.

Laundry and Gear Preparation:

  • Ensure that uniforms and other athletic apparel are laundered, repaired, and ready for use before games and practices.
  • Coordinate with coaching staff to prepare equipment and uniforms for away games, including packing and transport logistics.

Department and Facility Support: 

  • Supervise and schedule student employees that support equipment and laundering needs.   
  • Assist in the oversight and maintenance of all equipment in the equipment room. 
  • Work closely with coaching staff to understand specific team needs and ensure those needs are met.
  • Coordinate with the athletic administration regarding budget and purchasing of new or replacement equipment needs.
  • Communicate with vendors and suppliers to order equipment and resolve issues.
  • Research and negotiate pricing with vendors to ensure cost-effective purchases.
  • Assist in developing and managing the equipment budget for the athletic department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director and additionally by Head Coaches regarding equipment repair and maintenance.

Game Day Preparation and Support:

  • Attend all home and away football games (or delegate as needed) to ensure the team’s equipment needs are met.
  • Organize the packing and transport of apparel and equipment for away games or tournaments.

Other duties as assigned.  

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a bachelor’s degree in sports management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum one year experience working in an athletic equipment room, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment repair, maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Knowledge of specific sports equipment for a variety of collegiate sports.
  • Knowledge of athletic equipment standards, particularly within NCAA guidelines.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and travel with teams.
  • A valid driver's license is required. A driver's license check will be conducted, and new hire will be required to complete a defensive driving program.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple sports' equipment needs simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills to work with athletes, coaches, and vendors.
  • Proficient in using inventory management software preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • The role requires mobility across campus facilities and indoor/outdoor competition venues. 
  • Must be capable of lifting and transporting items weighing up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to adapt to varying temperatures. 
  • Proficient in safely and efficiently operating college vehicles.
  • Ability to work long days during away travel competitions.  

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel to support equipment needs for games and other program-related activities.
