Position Summary

The Transportation Department at the College of Saint Benedict invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefit eligible position of Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Technician. 

The Vehicle and Maintenance Technician supports the Transportation Department’s mission by ensuring the safety and reliability of College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU) owned vehicles and equipment. This position is responsible for performing inspections, preventative maintenance, and general repairs to keep the fleet operating efficiently. The technician works to provide safe, prompt, and courteous transportation services for students, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnose malfunctions, and repair CSB and SJU all CSB and SJU-owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Test and verify the safe operation of all vehicles and equipment following repairs.
  • Help reduce operational costs through efficient maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Instruct employees and students on the safe and proper use of college-owned vehicles and equipment; document any misuse after prior instruction.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Serve as a relief bus driver as needed.
  • Report for duty during campus closures or emergencies as essential staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • ASE Certified Technician
  • Two-year degree in automotive or diesel mechanics or equivalent apprenticeship required.
  • Two-year degree in welding or equivalent apprenticeship preferred.
  • Two years of experience maintaining and repairing industrial engines and construction equipment preferred.
  • Possess a valid class B CDL with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction.
  • Possess D.O.T inspection certificate for annual bus inspections.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining industrial and construction equipment.
  • Proficiency in oxy-acetylene, ARC, and MIG welding techniques and equipment use.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and mechanical transmissions, automotive electrical systems, and hydraulic lift systems.
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with members of the college community.
  • Ability to safely operate and instruct others on various types of equipment.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, including training and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass a DOT physical exam. 
  • Subject to DOT drug and alcohol random testing throughout employment.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • Ability to work with and or around hazardous chemicals in a safe manner.
  • Ability to tolerate working in varying temperatures and weather conditions. 
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, walk, and drive.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
