Position Summary

The Facilities Management Department at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU) invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefit-eligible position of Occupational Safety Specialist. The Occupational Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety programs at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU) to ensure a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The specialist will provide expert guidance on safety regulations, conduct risk assessments, and promote a culture of safety across the institutions.

Responsibilities

Safety Program Development:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain institutions-wide occupational safety programs, including equipment use training for all departments.
  • Prepare and maintain written safety policies and safety manuals for compliance with Federal Hazard Communication/Minnesota Right to Know, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Community Right to Know, AWAIR, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Safety/Fit Testing, Lock Out Tag Out, Asbestos Awareness, and other relevant programs as required.
  • Oversee and coordinate hazardous waste storage, disposal, and reporting for CSB, SJU, OSB, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Risk Assessment:

  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Test, or arrange for testing, of potentially hazardous situations, including air quality monitoring, asbestos, mold, and other environmental hazards, in coordination with Physical Plant personnel.
  • Collaborate with HR to investigate accidents and incidents involving hazards, fire, illness, or injury; identify root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Training and Education:

  • Act as the primary safety trainer, developing curriculum, assigning appropriate training, and coordinating external consultants/trainers as needed.
    1. Provide in-person departmental safety training sessions.
    2. Track attendance, ensure compliance, and coordinate makeup sessions for missed training.
    3. Coordinate and perform Fit Testing for applicable staff.
  • Ensure records of training are maintained and current for all personnel across the university.

Emergency Response Coordination:

  • Serve as a liaison to the institutions emergency response teams in matters involving occupational safety and hazardous material incidents.

Record Keeping and Documentation:

  • Prepare, maintain, and update safety records and compliance reports, audit reports, and regulatory documentation.
  • Maintain and ensure access to all safety records, including SDS sheets/databases, training records, and written safety programs.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Directors of Facilities Management. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering or other closely related discipline.
  • 1 – 2 years of related experience. 
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred. 
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local safety regulations. 
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct safety training and presentations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • May require occasional lifting of equipment and materials.
  • Must be able to conduct inspections in various campus settings, including laboratories, workshops, and construction sites.
  • May require emergency response availability during off-hours.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
